One reason why the Old Heidelberg Inn may have been so popular, even during Prohibition, was its location on the always crowded walkway that connected the South Lagoon area to the rest of the fair. This area was a perpetual traffic jam, with people trying to get from one end of the fair to the other, to and from the 23rd Street Entrance, or into or out of the Midway area in the background.

The Midway was a strange assortment of concessions. Most were straight out of a traditional county fair, featuring freak shows and games of chance, but some, surprisingly, had an educational element. One of the largest of these housed the Panthéon de la Guerre, the world’s largest painting. More than 6,000 life-sized figures were depicted in scenes from famous battles of World War I.
